What Is Cat Sterilisation?
Cat sterilisation is a routine surgical procedure that prevents your cat from reproducing. Spaying (an ovariohysterectomy) is the removal of the ovaries and uterus in a female cat, while neutering (castration) is the removal of the testicles in a male cat. Both procedures, often grouped as cat neutering and spaying, are performed under general anaesthesia and offer lasting health and behavioural benefits.
Female Cats (Spaying)
Helps prevent uterine infections (pyometra) and reduces the risk of mammary tumours.

Reduces roaming, territorial spraying and urine odour, and the risk of testicular disease.

When Should You Sterilise Your Cat?
For cats, we usually recommend sterilisation from 6 months of age and above, before behaviours such as spraying and roaming set in. Sterilising at the right age also avoids unplanned litters. Our vets will recommend the best timing for your cat, whether it’s a young cat, an adult, or a community cat, after an examination.

Careful Surgical Technique
When clinically needed, for example if there is bleeding during surgery, or at the vet’s discretion, LigaSure vessel sealing is available to reduce blood loss and surgery time (an additional charge applies). It is not used routinely for every procedure.
Pain Relief & Recovery
Your cat receives appropriate pain relief and is closely monitored as it wakes, supporting a comfortable recovery before going home.
Aftercare Guidance
You’ll go home with clear instructions: an Elizabethan collar (cone) to stop licking, keeping the wound clean and dry, limiting jumping and climbing, and returning for a post-operative check and any suture removal at around 10–14 days.

Will my cat get fat or change after neutering?
Neutering does not change your cat’s core personality. Metabolism can slow slightly, so any weight gain is easily managed with the right portion sizes. Behaviourally, most cats simply become calmer, with less spraying and roaming.
Does my cat need to fast before surgery?
Yes. We usually ask you to withhold food from the night before surgery (water is fine) so your cat’s stomach is empty for safe anaesthesia. We’ll confirm the exact fasting instructions when you book.
