Why Feline Dental Health Matters

Cats are masters at hiding pain, so dental disease often goes unnoticed until it is advanced. Tartar build-up, gingivitis and painful tooth resorption are common in cats and can make eating difficult. These are signs of periodontal (gum) disease, the most common dental problem in cats, which advances from early gingivitis to gum, bone and tooth loss, and whose bacteria can also affect organs such as the heart and kidneys. Regular cat dental cleaning removes plaque and calculus that brushing cannot reach, especially below the gumline, keeping your cat comfortable and healthy.

Catches Hidden Pain

Because cats hide discomfort, a professional feline dental cleaning reveals problems before they worsen.

Protects Teeth & Gums

Removing calculus helps prevent gingivitis, infection and tooth loss.

Low-Stress Care

As an ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic, we handle your cat gently to reduce fear and stress throughout the visit.

Signs Your Cat Needs a Dental Scale & Polish

Signs Your Cat Needs a Dental Scale & Polish

Book a feline dental scale and polish assessment if you notice any of these:

  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Drooling or pawing at the mouth
  • Dropping food or chewing on one side
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Reluctance to eat or weight loss
  • Yellow or brown tartar on teeth

Our Cat Dental Procedures

A complete dental examination and cleaning performed under general anaesthesia. A thorough dental scale and polish is the only way to clean below the gumline, where most feline dental disease begins.

Our Dog Dental Procedures

Pre-Dental Consultation

Our vet examines your cat and recommends blood tests to assess health and dental condition, especially important for senior cats, before confirming suitability for the procedure.

Safe General Anaesthesia

Your cat receives IV fluid therapy and comprehensive anaesthetic monitoring throughout, with gentle ISFM Cat Friendly handling to minimise stress.

Ultrasonic Scaling & Polishing

Using our iM3 GS Elite unit specialised for veterinary dentistry, we thoroughly scale away calculus, including from under the gums, then polish the teeth to slow future plaque.

Extractions with Pain Relief

If diseased teeth need removing, we routinely use local anaesthetic dental nerve blocks for intra- and post-operative pain relief.

Comfortable Recovery

Your cat is monitored as it wakes, supporting a calm and comfortable recovery before heading home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cat dental cleaning safe under anaesthesia?

Yes. As an ISFM Silver Cat Friendly Clinic we use low-stress feline handling. Before the procedure our vets examine your cat and recommend blood tests to confirm suitability, with IV fluid therapy and comprehensive anaesthetic monitoring throughout.

How do I know if my cat needs a dental cleaning?

Cats hide pain well. Watch for bad breath, drooling, dropping food, pawing at the mouth, red gums and reluctance to eat. A dental check can detect feline dental disease early.

How much does cat dental cleaning cost?

A cat dental scale and polish starts from $550 (inclusive of 9% GST), and more severe cases can go up to around $1,000. The procedure charge excludes blood tests (basic package from $250). We provide a personalised quote after a pre-dental consultation.

Why does my cat need anaesthesia for a dental cleaning?

Most feline dental disease lies below the gumline. Only under general anaesthesia can we safely scale away calculus from under the gums, so all our dental procedures are done under anaesthesia.

Do you take dental X-rays for cats?

We do not perform dental X-rays (radiographs) in-house. Our cat dental cleaning focuses on a gentle examination, ultrasonic scaling and polishing below the gumline under general anaesthesia. If your cat’s case requires dental X-rays, we will refer you to a suitable facility.

How can I keep my cat's teeth healthy at home?

Daily tooth brushing with a cat-safe toothpaste is the gold standard, introduced gradually. Dental treats, dental diets and water additives can also help slow plaque. Look for products carrying the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal. Home care complements but does not replace professional scaling below the gumline.
